This year we’ve organised a very special weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s and Lotus’s first Formula One World Championship at Duns on 18th and 19th May.
For some years we’ve held an annual event based in Duns to remember Jimmy. Typically we meet on Saturday, go for a scenic drive then hold a dinner with a guest speaker. On Sunday morning we meet outside the Jim Clark Room and then drive to Chirnside Parish Church to lay a wreath on his grave before coming back to Duns for lunch.
As this year is so important and with the help, support and enthusiasm of Clive Chapman, Nick Fennell and John Bowers, we’ll be holding a very special event on May 18th and 19th. Nick and John own and race the two Type 25’s that Jimmy drove in his 1963 Championship winning season and Classic Team Lotus maintains and race-prepares them. At last years Goodwood Revival Andy Middlehurst won the prestigious Glover Trophy in John’s chassis R4 with Nick a close second driving chassis R5.
To celebrate this important anniversary Clive and Classic Team Lotus are bringing both 25’s up to Duns and Nick and John will be demonstrating them along the main street at midday on Sunday 19th. To add to the spectacle we will also be driving the first Elan that Jimmy drove (997 NUR now owned by Michael Schryver) and Andy Middlehurst’s Lotus Cortina. All the cars will be on display outside the Jim Clark Room all day on Saturday and on Sunday morning.
As well as Clive, Nick and John, several other personalities connected with Jimmy will be there over the weekend including Bob Dance and Ian Scott Watson. Bob was Jimmy’s mechanic during some of his greatest triumphs including his 1965 Indianapolis victory and of course Ian was Jim’s mentor (and early sponsor) and the person responsible for encouraging the young Scottish farmer to take up motor racing in the mid 1950’s.
The Jim Clark Room will be open all weekend and Andrew Tulloch, the Assistant Curator, will be organising a special exhibition featuring some of Jim’s memorabilia which is not usually on display at the Room.
On Saturday afternoon we have organised a tour of the local area to see some of the places Jim knew and loved and all members are invited to take part. Just arrive at the Jim Clark Room by midday.
The demonstration runs will be at midday on Sunday and we then drive the 4 miles to Chirnside Parish Church for a short ceremony and to lay a wreath on Jimmy’s grave. We then return to Duns for lunch.
The whole weekend is a free event to remember Jimmy so please come along and support us if you can. It promises to be a memorable weekend to celebrate the magnificent achievements of 50 years ago and I hope as many members as possible will be there to raise a glass with us.
