In 1968 a young woman from the Lincolnshire fens answered an agency advert for a mother’s help with a London family called Hill. Within weeks Andrea Thorlby was part of the household of one of Britain’s best-loved sporting heroes, just as Graham Hill was leading a grieving Team Lotus to the 1968 World Championship.
My Hillarious Life is Andy’s account of those years, seen from the nursery, the hotel and the hire car rather than the cockpit. There are armed police at Geneva airport, a stranded party at RAF Cranwell awaiting Graham’s private plane, dinners among racing royalty on Lake Como, and the anxious Sunday-evening calls for race results, including the news from Watkins Glen in 1969. Above all it shows Graham and Bette as loving parents, and the friendship that lasted the rest of Bette’s life.
Illustrated throughout with lovely period photographs, with a foreword by Damon Hill.
