Black & Gold: The Story of the John Player Specials by Johnny Tipler is a substantial Coterie Press history of the John Player Special era at Team Lotus.
The book follows the story from the early 1970s, when Team Lotus moved from Gold Leaf colours to the now-famous black and gold JPS livery, through to the end of the John Player Special period in 1986, when Ayrton Senna and Johnny Dumfries were driving for the team. It covers the commercial, design and sporting background to one of the most recognisable liveries in Formula One history.
Johnny Tipler was closely connected with the period, having worked with the Stanbury Foley Organisation, whose client was John Player & Son. The book draws on interviews with key figures from the JPS era, images from John Player photographer Ian Catt, and a wide range of JPS memorabilia and archive material.
With 316 pages, large-format production and extensive period photography, this is a key reference title for Lotus, Team Lotus, John Player Special and classic Formula One collectors.
